Tone:
- formal
- semi-formal
- informal
Opening:
- Dear Sir/Madam (you do not know the person you are writing
to)
-
Dear Mr Smith (you know the name of the person, but this is semi-formal
communication)
-
Dear John (you know the person, and you are on informal terms)
Opening phrase:
In most formal and semi-formal letters you should state your purpose in
the first sentence. You can start with a “lead-in” such as“I am writing to you
because...”
I am writing to complain about ...
I would be happy to take part in ...
I am writing to express my interest in ...
I feel it would
be a good idea to ...
I have just
received your letter about ...
I am writing with
regard to ...
Just writing to say ...
Closing phrase:
I look forward to
your response on this matter.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
I would be
grateful if your could send me details about this as soon as possible.
I hope the
situation will be resolved as soon as possible.
