Essay - Online shopping (DISCUSSION essay; For and Against)

Nowadays online shopping becomes more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development? Give your reasons and examples.

With the development of the Internet doing shopping via the web is more popular than in-store shopping. Some people think that this is a positive trend. However, other people think that this development has serious disadvantages. This is not an easy question to answer if this development is positive or rather negative but in this essay I will look at this issue.

[DISADVANTAGES]

There are a few minuses of online shopping. Firstly, security issues should be taken into account because end client can be cheated in many ways. For example, the package may not be sent at all to the recipient or the quality of the delivered product can be lower than expected. In addition, there is no possibility to touch things before buying, which is especially important when people buy clothes or soft goods. Besides that, online shopping cannot give a pleasure of spending spare time with friends or family walking together in the shopping mall. This is probably the reason why experts claim that there are no social interactions while buying goods via the Internet.

[ADVANTAGES]

Nevertheless, doing shopping on the Internet has many advantages. Firstly, this way of purchasing goods is faster than traditional one. It is not necessary to go to the mall, pick up items, stay in the queue and go back home after a few hours. Secondly, online shopping is extremely convenient, because it can be done from all places where is an access to the Internet. Nowadays computers are not even necessary because of popularity of smartphones. 

[CONCLUSION WITH OPINION]

To sum up, there are pluses and minuses of online buying. From my point of view, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages and probably this is the reason why online shopping is so popular and in some countries even more popular than traditional shopping.
